Identification should include

• types of abuse (e.g., physical, sexual, financial, emotional/psychological) vs. neglect
• at-risk populations
• risk factors
• signs and symptoms
• laws pertaining to duty to report for medical personnel.

Process/Skill Questions:

• How does abuse differ from neglect?
• How could any kind of abuse affect a person’s long-term mental health?
• If abuse is suspected, what medical specialties have a duty to report? How is the concept of confidentiality addressed?
• If you were an emergency room worker, what signs and symptoms might you see in a child that would cause you to suspect abuse?
