(Optional) Perform grinding operations with a pedestal/bench grinder and/or portable/hand-held disc/angle grinder.
Performance should include following all required safety procedures and protocols to include
- undergoing safety instruction and testing prior to operating power tools, machinery, or equipment
- explaining hazards associated with grinding operations
- high speed flying particles
- dust or fume inhalation
- kickback, fires, and explosions
- electrical shock, cuts, and abrasions
- ear damage resulting from noise
- musculoskeletal disorders resulting from repetitive motion and awkward work positions
- inspecting tools and components prior to use and operating tools according to manufacturer instructions
- using the required PPE
- selecting the correct tools and equipment (e.g., ensuring the RPM [rotations per minute] rating of the disc/blade is higher than that of the angle grinder)
- applying safety procedures, guidelines, protocols, and manufacturer specifications (e.g., adjusting guards to deflect flying particles away from the operator; using an 180° guard between operator and wheel).
Process/Skill Questions:
- Where should angle grinders not be used?
- What can one do to ensure angle grinders are used safely?
- Why should grinders be checked for defective wheels, and frayed or damaged electrical cords?
- How does one perform a “ring test”?
- Why is it important to only replace accessories with those recommended by the manufacturer?
