Demonstrate filling a syringe for injection.
Demonstration should include
- selecting the proper-sized syringe
- determining the amount to be placed in the syringe
- inserting the syringe into the top of the bottle
- placing the bottle upside down in one hand and holding it securely
- withdrawing the proper volume
- removing the syringe from the bottle
- tapping the edge of the syringe to remove any air bubbles, or slightly expelling the air by pushing the end of the plunger
- placing used syringe in the sharps container.
Process/Skill Questions:
- What is “dead space”?
- Why should air bubbles never be present in an injection syringe? How are bubbles removed from the contents of a syringe?
- How should one properly dispose of needles and syringes?
