Demonstrate filling a syringe for injection.

Demonstration should include

  • selecting the proper-sized syringe
  • determining the amount to be placed in the syringe
  • inserting the syringe into the top of the bottle
  • placing the bottle upside down in one hand and holding it securely
  • withdrawing the proper volume
  • removing the syringe from the bottle
  • tapping the edge of the syringe to remove any air bubbles, or slightly expelling the air by pushing the end of the plunger
  • placing used syringe in the sharps container.

Process/Skill Questions:

  • What is “dead space”?
  • Why should air bubbles never be present in an injection syringe? How are bubbles removed from the contents of a syringe?
  • How should one properly dispose of needles and syringes?
