Demonstrate the safe use of equipment.
Demonstration should include the types of equipment used in the agricultural mechanics field, along with the correct use, hazards, and precautions associated with each, in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and instructor’s guidelines. Equipment may include
- pneumatic equipment (e.g., tire machine, pneumatic jack)
- hydraulic equipment (e.g., floor jack, lift rack, hydraulic press, engine hoist)
- electrical equipment (e.g., bench grinder, drill press, table saw, bandsaw, planer, jointer, sander, battery testers and chargers)
- thermal equipment (e.g., kilns, forges, cutting torches)
- load securement equipment and vehicle coupling devices (e.g., appropriate tiedowns, safety chains, appropriate Working Load Limit [WLL]).
Process/Skill Questions:
- What are unsafe uses of air compressors in the agricultural lab/workshop?
- What is the safest way to hold a part in a vise?
- When is the cleaning tank used?
- When securing equipment to a trailer, where can a student find the Working Load Limit for a tiedown?
- How much of the vertical weight of a piece of equipment must be secured by tiedowns?
- How many tiedowns are necessary for a piece of machinery on wheels or tracks weighing 10,000 lbs. or more?
