Patching should include the following steps:

  • Measure and cut the amount of roofing material needed to repair the damaged area.
  • Cut a slit in the existing roofing material above the damaged area.
  • Slide the new piece of material into the slit.
  • Hold the slit edge and remaining edges of the new roofing material up; apply cold tar or roof cement, and press the edges down.
  • Nail the edges.
  • Cover the nail heads and edges of the patch with roofing tar or sealer.
