Describe hyperventilation as related to cabin pressure and its threat to pilots.

Description should include the definition of hyperventilation and its frequency in pilots; symptoms of hyperventilation, such as visual impairment, unconsciousness, lightheadedness or dizzy sensation, tingling sensations, hot and cold sensations, and muscle spasms; diagnosis of hyperventilation; factors that aggravate hyperventilation (e.g., increased breathing rate, anxiety); and the dangers of hyperventilation. Note: if a pilot is experiencing these symptoms and using supplemental oxygen, he/she should check the equipment and flow rate to ensure symptoms are not hypoxia related.

Refer to AIM 8-1-3, Hyperventilation in Flight.
