Demonstrate the use and application of foam in various fire situations.

Demonstration should include

  • determining the type of materials that are fueling the fire
  • choosing the appropriate class of foam per fuel (i.e., Class A or Class B)
  • using the correct proportioning and concentration method, including
    • induction
    • injection
    • batch-mixing
    • premixing
  • selecting the foam delivery device, including
    • hand-line nozzles
    • medium- and high-expansion foam-generating devices.

Process/Skill Questions:

  • Why would a fluoroprotein foam be used to fight a fire?
  • What is the bank-down method, and in what situation might it be used?
  • Why might poor foam generation be experienced?
  • What are the restrictions on the use of foams that contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Virginia?
  • What is the difference between the use of fog nozzles vs. foam nozzles?
