the ABCs of behavior management (i.e., changing the antecedent or the consequence to change behavior)
- A – antecedent (i.e., what precedes the behavior)
- B – behavior (i.e., action, activity, or process that can be observed and measured)
- C – consequence (i.e., how people in the environment react to the behavior)
communication methods
- speaking slowly, softly, and simply
- cuing – providing guidance for client to perform a task on their own
- mirroring – modeling
- directing – instructing the client
- redirecting – changing the focus from one behavior to another
rewarding appropriate behavior
- planning what behavior to address, breaking it down to steps, and rewarding each step completed
- rewards may be primary rewards, social rewards, or physical rewards
- rewards must suit client preferences and be given in a way that would normally occur in the environment.
