Course Description:

Early Childhood, Education, and Services II, a specialized course for students with career interests in early childhood education and services, builds upon concepts introduced in Early Childhood, Education, and Services I (19152/8285). Students plan, organize, and conduct learning experiences that provide safe and healthy learning environments; promote physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development; utilize curricula responsive to children’s needs; and promote family engagement. Students expand their knowledge of legal, ethical, and education and training requirements for early childhood professionals. Reviewing knowledge, skills, and aptitudes required for careers in early childhood careers and creating a professional portfolio assist students with demonstrating college and career readiness. Contextual instruction and student participation in co-curricular career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills. High-quality work-based learning (HQWBL) will provide experiential learning opportunities related to students' career goals and/or interests, integrated with instruction, and performed in partnership with local businesses and organizations.

Note:

The Virginia Administrative Code regulates the class size for this course. For additional information, see 8VAC20-120-150, "Maximum class size," or contact the Virginia Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education at cte@doe.virginia.gov.

Note:

The ParaPro Assessment (ETS Code 1755, single test) is transitioning to the new ParaPathways Assessment (ETS Code 5757), which now consists of two subtests: Reading and Writing (5758) and Mathematics (5759).

Candidates must pass both subtests to earn the certification. During the transition period from Sept. 1, 2025, through Aug. 31, 2026, both the retiring ParaPro and the new ParaPathways assessments were active. However, the last day to take the ParaPro Assessment was June 30, 2026, which means some candidates may still receive either one test score (ParaPro) or two subtest scores (ParaPathways), depending on which assessment format they completed.

The Virginia Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education requests that individuals taking the ParaPathways Assessment continue to use the ParaPro Assessment test name and reporting code, because the Board-approved credentials list cannot be updated at this time.
